A Mother's Fight Against Sickle Cell Disease
Training Programs for School Administrators

This service trains school administrators and their staff on the Sickle Cell Disease and sickle cell trait. We train them on ways that can help make the learning environment more welcoming to those with Sickle Cell Disease. Students with Sickle Cell Disease often miss school due to their illness. We want to reduce any bias against these students and give them the best chance to succeed. We also train them on how to talk and educate students with Sickle Cell Disease and how to interact with their parents

Assistance at the Center

We have counselors on site who can talk to clients about the hardships that come with their condition and how they can overcome them. This can help our clients build self-esteem and self-worth. The counselor will also spend time with the whole family; these conversations can help build trust, love and understanding within the family.

We have on site classrooms that teach our clients how to better cope and better manage their condition. We also use these classrooms to teach the community about Sickle Cell trait and Sickle Cell Disease, while encouraging adult and child screening. We also offer off-site workshop to increase awareness about Sickle Cell Disease and Sickle Cell Traits in our community.

We also have classes that teach different skills to increase our client’s chances of getting a job. Those with Sickle Cell Disease can come to the Masanga Center to learn English, computer skills, and more.

Support Group

We meet throughout the week in our support groups and spiritual groups to encourage and learn from each other to help those with Sickle Cell Disease and their family to develop a more positive approach in life. These support groups offer people with Sickle Cell Disease a chance to talk about their experiences without the fear of judgement. These groups can greatly improve a client’s outlook on life. Our spiritual support groups aim to give these clients a community that is rooted in Christian beliefs. These groups will function like our other support groups; however, they will also include Bible readings. These groups help our clients to have hope in something that is greater than they are. Our groups also give these clients the opportunity to network. In these groups, our clients are able to meet and talk with a wide range of people
